Nonprofits are pledging $24,000 for a tip that will lead to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for the December death of a whooping crane in Aransas County.

Necropsy results show the endangered bird may have been handled after death, according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service news release.

The service is offering a $2,500 award and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is contributing an additional $1,000, bringing the total potential reward to $27,500.

Despite not knowing how the crane died, the nonprofit Friends of the Wild Whoopers is offering up to $10,000 to show it means business when it comes to the tallest flying bird in North America, said Chester McConnell, one of the organization’s founders.
